Benefits For Dependents Of Veterans

MotherSon2

Veterans often get injured or killed while in the service. When this happens, the whole family is affected, including spouses and young children. It can be a frustrating situation, especially when there is loss of income involved.

When financial issues mount, what options do dependents of veterans have? As it turns out, there are many types of benefits that they can receive.

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) offers much-needed financial support to spouses and dependents of veterans or service members. The VA offers assistance in the form of financial support as well as health care and education. Survivors of veterans may also qualify for additional benefits such as compensation for burial costs as well as survivor compensation.

For spouses and dependent children of disabled veterans, the available benefits include medical support, income, and education. If a veteran has a disability rating of at least 30%, the compensation increases if they have a spouse and/or dependents. In the event of the veteran’s death, survivors may become eligible for dependency indemnity compensation. Parents, spouses, and children may be able to receive some form of financial assistance.

For spouses and children of veterans who have a 100% disability rating, the VA provides benefits such as healthcare through TRICARE. Survivors’ & Dependents’ Educational Assistance is another benefit for spouses and children of disabled veterans or those who have died while on active duty. It provides educational support for college and vocational courses. For children, it starts at age 18. For spouses, it starts when eligibility is determined. The benefits last for three years (or 10 years if the veteran has died). Eligible dependents will receive a monthly payment to cover college or graduate degree programs, career-training certificate courses, apprenticeships, and on-the-job training. Educational and career counseling may also be available.

CHAMPVA extends medical care to the spouse and dependent children of most 100% service-connected disabled veterans. It covers a wide range of health care services and necessary supplies. Eligibility varies based on factors such as age and marital status.

Additional VA dependent benefits may exist for some survivors of disabled or deceased veterans, adding further assistance to those who have lost a loved one. Enlisting the services of a Veteran Service Officer can be helpful. They can assess your situation and help you gather documents and file claims so you can get all the benefits you are entitled to receive.
