Help For Veterans Available Through Aid And Attendance Pension

shutterstock_722746117

Unfortunately, many veterans fail to get the benefits they deserve because they simply don’t know what they are entitled to receive. Their health is at risk because they can’t afford to pay for certain medical bills, only to find out these bills are covered by various VA benefits.

One commonly overlooked benefit is the Aid and Attendance Pension. This benefit is in place to help offset the cost of long-term care for veterans and their spouses.

What is the Aid and Attendance Pension?

The Aid and Attendance Pension is a form of financial aid available to veterans who require some form of long-term care. Benefits cover nursing homes and assisted living facilities. Veterans who live at home and need assistance with daily living activities such as dressing, eating, bathing and toileting are also eligible for these benefits. Spouses and widows are eligible as well.

Requirements for the Aid and Attendance Pension

Veterans must have served in active duty for at least 90 days, with one day during wartime. They must have been honorably discharged.

Finances are also taken into consideration. Excluding vehicles and homes, the recipient must have less than $80,000 in assets. The annual income must be under $15,773 for a single veteran and $19,770 for one who is married.

Be aware that there are exceptions. Your age, life expectancy and health care costs will determine eligibility as well.

Getting Benefits

Benefits depend on marital status and who need long-term care. The monthly benefit payment for a single veteran is $1,794, while a married one will receive $2,127. Two married veterans will receive $2,846 monthly. A veteran with a sick spouse will receive $1,410 a month and a surviving spouse will receive $1,153.

There are three steps required. First, you must gather the required documents. The next step is to fill them correctly. Finally, the completed documents must be mailed to the Pension Management Center.

If you believe you are eligible for this benefit, it’s important to fill out the paperwork correctly. It can take up to eight months for someone to review your paperwork. Plus, if you fill it out incorrectly and it ends up rejected, you must wait one year to reapply.

Therefore, don’t take the chance and fill out the paperwork by yourself. There are many free resources who are accredited by the VA and can help you. They are well-trained and can assist you from start to finish.
