How To Speed Up Approval Of A Social Security Disability Claim

Speed

The COVID pandemic has caused a lot of delays and frustration in our everyday lives. It’s been especially challenging for those who need benefits such as Social Security Disability benefits. Wait times are continually increasing and are now at an average of 169 days to get a decision on a claim. That’s close to six months.

That’s a long time to wait for money to come in, especially if you don’t have any other income. Is there anything you can do to expedite the process? Luckily, there are some ways to get a quicker decision.

Compassionate Allowances

Those with certain medical conditions may qualify for a compassionate allowance. The Social Security Administration (SSA) has a Compassionate Allowances program, which covers more than 250 illnesses and injuries, such as cancer and neurological disorders. The SSA will automatically determine if you are eligible, but if you have a qualifying condition, note it on your application.

Terminal Illness

If your condition is expected to result in death, you’ll automatically get faster claim processing and determination. Eligible conditions include AIDS, ALS, stage IV cancer, and hospice care. Again, it doesn’t hurt to note a terminal illness on your application.

Military Service

The SSA expedites disability claims for wounded warriors, who are veterans of the U.S. armed forces who were disabled while in active service on or after October 1, 2001. They also qualify if they have a compensation rating of 100% permanent and total from the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).

Dire Financial Need

If you have a dire financial need for prompt benefits, the SSA may be able to quickly process your claim. You may qualify if you don’t have food, medicine or a place to live, or you face imminent eviction or foreclosure. To be eligible, you should submit a letter or call the SSA and let them know about your situation.

Congressional Help

Congress can also help you with a benefits claim. Contact a senator or House member to inquire about the status of the claim and see if you can get it expedited.

Get a Representative on Your Side

There may be disability advocates in your area who can assist you with the application process for a reasonable cost. A representative can make sure that you’ve filled out the form correctly and thoroughly. If there are no low-cost options around, it may be helpful to hire a lawyer. A lawyer can help you with the claims process and ensure you talk to the right people about your claim.

Social Security Disability benefits can take many months for approval. That’s a long time to wait for money, so use the tips above to shorten your wait time.
