Man Hit In Head By Tractor, Killed In New York Workplace Accident

Construction14

Accidents can happen anywhere. You may experience them in your home, on the road, while running errands, or even while at work. Sadly, a New York man experienced a fatal accident while at work. He died after getting hit by a tractor.

The incident happened on the morning of January 22. A 27-year-old man from Watertown was working in the town of Skaneateles. He was on a job at 1725 Coon Hill Road when he was hit in the head by an excavator for unknown reasons. The man was seriously injured and taken to Upstate University Hospital, where he later died.

The man worked for Heller’s Gas, a propane supplier in Hounsfield. The sheriff’s office has not released additional details as to how the incident occurred. The accident is still under investigation.

The man had a degree in criminal justice and was an avid hockey player.

Dangers of Getting Hit in the Head With an Excavator

Getting hit in the head by an excavator or any other tractor is no laughing matter. It is an extremely dangerous situation that is often life-threatening. Even if you feel fine after such an accident, getting immediate medical help is crucial. That is because symptoms like headaches, confusion, vomiting, or drowsiness can appear hours or days later.

Excavators are massive, powerful machines, and even a brief impact can cause catastrophic injuries. Here are the main dangers to be aware of:

  • Traumatic brain injury (TBI). A blow from an excavator bucket, arm, or cab can cause severe TBIs, including concussions, brain bleeding, swelling, or permanent brain damage. These injuries may affect memory, speech, personality, and the ability to work or live independently.
  • Skull fractures. The force involved can easily fracture the skull. Open or depressed skull fractures raise the risk of infection, brain exposure, and long-term neurological complications.
  • Internal brain bleeding. Head impacts often cause subdural or epidural hematomas, which refers to bleeding inside the skull that can rapidly become fatal without emergency treatment.
  • Neck and spinal cord injuries. The head snapping forward or sideways can damage the cervical spine, leading to paralysis, chronic pain, or loss of motor function.
  • Facial and sensory damage. Victims may suffer crushed facial bones, vision loss, hearing damage, or jaw fractures, often requiring multiple surgeries and long-term rehabilitation.
  • Fatal injuries. Given the weight and momentum of excavators, head strikes frequently result in death, especially if the person is pinned, struck at full swing, or hit without protective equipment. This is what happened in this case.
