What Federal Benefits Can Veterans Qualify For?

VeteransBen5b

Disabled veterans have a lot of benefits available to them, and many are for programs they may not even know about. There are many health programs available as well as benefits for spouses and children.

The economy has made it hard to pay bills and everyday expenses. If you’ve been struggling financially, don’t give up. The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) offers a variety of programs that can provide you with much-needed compensation. Read on to learn more.

Disability Compensation

A veteran with a disability rating of 100% may be able to receive more than $3,000 a month.  With 100% disability, you will get your full military retirement as well as full VA compensation. Keep in mind that a 100% disability rating does not mean you cannot do anything. The rating is cumulative, so as an example, you may be 50% disabled in your knees and have a heart condition that is also 50% disabling. Also, fully disabled veterans may qualify for additional Special Monthly Compensation if they have lost a limb or organ.

Free Health Care

Veterans with a 100% disability rating may be placed in Priority Group 1. Veterans in this group can receive various health care benefits, such as hospitalizations, inpatient services, vision care, hearing aids, prosthetics, and medications. Some preventive care and mental health services are also included, all free of charge.

Home Health Care and Hospice Services

Disabled veterans can also receive home health care, assisted living, and hospice services through VA. Keep in mind that the scope and availability can vary from state to state. There are co-pay requirements, but a veteran with a 100% disability rating will pay very little in co-pays.

Hospice care is available if the veteran has a terminal condition and less than six months to live. They must be no longer seeking treatment other than pain management. Hospice care can be provided at home, in an inpatient setting, or in an outpatient clinic.

Home health care services allow for a home health aide to come to a veteran’s home to assist with personal care and daily living activities.

Dental Services

If you are not fully disabled, then there are a lot of limitations on dental services. However, if you have a 100% disability rating, you are eligible to receive full dental care at absolutely no cost.

Compensation for Family Members

Some veterans can receive additional compensation for family members, including their spouse, children, and parents. This can mean a few hundred extra dollars per month. Click here to learn more.
